bunk-bed. There is also a bathroom, a lounge with a television
and DVD player, a spacious dining room with a fireplace, a fully
equipped kitchen, and a terrace with dining and barbecue area. A
selection of games, toys, books and comics is at your disposal.
Sheets and towels are available for hire on request. Our gîte guests
are invited to come and enjoy a drink with us upon arrival.

Blé noir
(buckwheat) or sarrazin was brought back by the crusades and was
eaten by the “Sarrazin”, from whom it derives its name. Inappropriately
named “black wheat”, this annual plant can grow to 80cm and looks
similar to rhubarb. Not suitable for bread-making, buckwheat was grown
right across the Duchy under the rule of Anne de Bretagne, making it the
staple food of Brittany. Why not try a crêpe or galette
made from buckwheat, or buckwheat honey with its pronounced flavour? |
 |
|
Our gîte guests can also enjoy the games on offer at our chambres
d’hôtes (bed and breakfast), including board games, table tennis,
comics, videos,
badminton and various ball games…
Watch our animals roaming freely in the 3 hectares of countryside around
the Clos du Tay.

The
Pâlis
The
countryside surrounding La Gacilly is home to many pâlis, ancient
black schist slabs, the existence of which proves that Brittany is not
merely a region of granite. At the Clos du Tay the lintels are black
schist and the chimney and walls are made from local stone. |

Pâlis
and the schist cross |
|
The
biggest slabs were used for building, such as interior walls, pigsties
or stables, while smaller slabs were used as fences to divide up pieces
of land and prevent animals from straying. Interwoven vegetation (la
plesse) supported the pâlis, thus completing the fence. Today pâlis
are used to decorate gardens or as paving slabs.

You will be able to discover pâlis of all kinds at the Clos du

The
Tiles
Slate
roofs are extremely common in Brittany and slate itself is part of local
heritage. Slate has been extracted from open quarries since the 12th
Century, and over time slate roofs have replaced thatched roofs. Slate
roofs are known for their watertightness and durability - old slates 7mm
thick can last for up to 200 years.
Before terracotta ridge tiles were used, many roofs bore a
Lignolet, a criss-cross series of jagged slates to keep out
the rain. Many houses in Saint Martin sur Oust and Saint
Vincent sur Oust have had their Lignolets restored to
their former glory. The photo shows a Lignolet here at
the Tay.
